3 Gym Excuses You Can’t Use Anymore

Every year, millions of Americans create New Year’s resolutions consisting of hopeful gym promises. Unfortunately, by February, a lot of those promises are already broken due in part to easily-formed excuses. But we’re not going to let that happen to you in 2019! Here are 3 of the most common gym excuses and how you can beat them:

Excuse 1: I Don’t Have the Time

Ah, the most common excuse in the book. It seems like this one has been around since time was kept with a sundial. However, rarely is it the case that time limits your exercise. Instead, time is spent doing unhealthy activities like watching TV, surfing the internet, and playing video games.

Beating the Excuse: Find the Time!

Prioritize your health. Rather than spending 30 minutes on the couch, put that time to use on the treadmill.

If your schedule is overwhelming, finding time may still be difficult. If you can’t make time for every day of the week, working out as much as you can is better than not going at all. Even just exercising once a week is much better for your health than not working out at all.

Excuse 2: I Don’t Know Where to Start

New exercisers may find the gym intimidating. They get one look at a bodybuilder, the marathon runner, or the professional cyclists in spin class and can feel intimidated. Remember, we’re all here for the same reasons and everyone has a day one.

Beating the Excuse: Get Help!
Chances are, those athletes are actually pretty friendly and willing to help you achieve your own goals. Keep in mind, they were once new here, as well. If that seems daunting, try out a personal trainer. They’re there to help you get comfortable with machines and movements, and will build your confidence to try new, or more challenging, workouts. You’ll also have the peace of mind that you are working out in a safe and sustainable way.

Excuse 3: I’m Lazy

This is an interesting excuse because it’s for the self-aware. While you have taken step one and admitted your laziness, the underlying issue remains. After a long day of work, you want to spend the rest of your night relaxing.

Beating the Excuse: Exercise in the Morning!
Your body is full of energy and ready to perform after a good night’s rest. You’ll notice a drastic difference between your motivation at 6 AM than at 6 PM. Overcome your laziness before it even arrives by exercising early in the morning!

Now that we’ve buried these excuses, it’s time to put the work in! You have no reason to fear the gym. You’re not alone and there are plenty of resources if you run into trouble.
