About JoEllen Carter
JoEllen’s passion for physical therapy comes from her love of movement and her desire to help people return to the activities that are meaningful to them. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Wofford College and her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Belmont University in 2025.
Before joining MPOWER, JoEllen gained experience in inpatient rehabilitation and performance settings through PRN roles at Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, St. Thomas Rehabilitation Hospital, and Amplify Health and Performance. She is certified in Dry Needling Level 1 and SFMA.
JoEllen takes a whole-person approach to care, focusing on helping patients move better, build confidence, and develop the tools they need to manage their recovery. During PT school, she also had the opportunity to live and work in Italy as a student physical therapist—an experience that was especially meaningful to her.

PHYSICAL THERAPY PHILOSOPHY
My goals are to meet patients where they are, listen to them, involve them in their plan of care, and equip them to take meaningful steps to get back to where they want to be. I believe in using evidence-based care, treating the whole person, and helping people have a greater understanding of their bodies and feel confident in their ability to recover and move well.
What to expect about working with JoEllen
They can expect me to involve them in their plan of care to ensure that it is collaborative and specific to them and what they care most about. I want patients to understand the “why” behind their treatment plan and feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts and concerns with me.
her Greatest success
I had a patient who was very fearful of movement after an injury they experienced. I used my knowledge and skills to build them a solid plan, but what meant more to the patient was taking time to listen, encourage, and help them believe that they were capable. Through that experience, I saw firsthand that while our knowledge and skills as physical therapists are essential to the process, it is only helpful if we also incorporate a more human aspect to our treatment – empathy and connection.
